Lakey Beach - Dompu

Lakey Beach is the most famous surfing spot in Sumbawa Island. And just because i can’t swim or surf, it doesn’t mean that i can’t go there to enjoy looking at the surfers, i mean the beach! Beach!! Located in Hu’u District, Dompu Regency, approximately 6 hours from Sumbawa Besar city.

I don’t know much about surfing but as i saw Lakey Beach looked perfect for it, it has big waves or based on the conversation i had with the villager there he said Lakey has 4 kinds of waves which are Lakey Peak, Cobble Stones, Lakey Pipe and Periscop. But yea that’s it, i’m never interested in surfing since i can’t even swim but Lakey Beach is one of a beautiful places people gotta visit in Sumbawa.

As i like exploring around Sumbawa, i always wanted to go to Lakey. But since i knew it’s a surfing spot, i thought that i wouldn’t have anything to do there. But then i realized it’s not the point, being somewhere new where i can meet new people and get new experiences and know more about my island so i can share the story to other people that’s the whole point of it.

So one day i just quickly decided that i wanted to go there. With my bestfriend we decided to just take a bus for Rp. 60.000 and we were pretty lucky cause a friend’s family that i never even met, it’s more like a friend of a friend, picked us up at the terminal, invited us to eat in their house and then dropped us to Lakey Beach which is an hour from their house.

I went to Lakey beach twice and that 1st time i went there, i stayed at Alamanda Bungalows. That’s what i like about Lakey, you still can get a Rp. 100,000 beach bungalows. The have like 5 rooms and we were the only costumers at the time. While on my 2nd visit i stayed at Amangati Resort, it’s Rp. 800,000/nite. Both hotels are nice but i guess next time i’ll go to the cheap one since both are exactly only few steps away from the beach. Amangati has swimming pool tho. Even tho i don't swim, pool is still a pretty good view :D

Food were pretty expensive tho :(, there were many small shops and resto near our bungalows. Perfect for coffee in the morning, and there was a tower in front of the bungalows that i got on to see the nice beach view from the top. Lakey beach area is not so big, we could walk from one side to the other to see all the hotels and restaurants along the beach. Sunset there looked pretty nice too but twice i went there, it was always cloudy -,-

To be honest, before i went to Lakey some people told me that the beach is not that nice and it’s dirty and it’s not worth the long drive. But i guess it depends on how you see it and how you enjoy your trip. I completely enjoyed my twice visits. But on my 2nd visit the beach looked better than the 1st one. I guess it just depends on the season too. I met some nice people there, and i enjoyed the sea and sunset view. People gave me free ride 3 times and helped us out, it was more than enough for us to enjoy the trip.

The beach is pretty nice for me, with its white sands and nice villagers. And for those who like surfing, it is really a good place. They sometimes held international surfing contest there. It’s prolly one of the most touristy places in Sumbawa and no wonder many kids there can speak pretty good English.

Not really sure about public transportation from Lakey beach to the city tho cause we didn’t find anything at that time till we met this girl who offered us a ride to the nearest bus station. Even when we got the bus, we had to wait for them to watch boxing on tv -,- so another friend of a friend that we accidentally met offered us another free ride again to the other bus station which was like one hours away. 3 people with backpacks on motorbike for one hour was pretty.....tiring. But it was one of my very memorable trip and i’d love to experience that again \\(^o^)//
